Puntacana Resort & Club announced on August their sponsorship of Argentinian Golfer, Emiliano Grillo. Grillo was awarded the title of PGA Rookie of the Year for 2016, during the Safeway Open PGA Tournament in Napa Valley, October 12th -16th.
As part of the agreement, Emiliano Grillo will serve as a brand ambassador for Puntacana Resort & Club, wearing the resort’s logo and using the Corales Golf Course to practice and prepare for the PGA Tour from 2016 to 2017. During his visits to the Dominican Republic, Grillo will also host clinics for the public at Corales Golf Course at Puntacana Resort & Club.
At an early age, Emiliano Grillo (now 24), won fourth place at the US Junior Amateur 2008 and won the Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Award 2009. In 2011 he achieved notoriety through the European Tour through qualifying tournaments and finished in the top 10 in his first event, the African Open in 2012. Currently, Grillo is positioned as one of the top 25 best players worldwide for the PGA and is the first player to win in his first season as an official member of the PGA Tour since 2013.
The Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship will be the Web.com Tour’s first tournament in the Dominican Republic and first played on any of the islands in the Caribbean.
A three-year agreement was executed by the officials for 2016 through 2018.
The 2017 tournament will be played May 1st to 7th. The Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship will feature a 156-player field, with an eligibility component similar to that used at other Web.com Tour events in Latin America.
The Web.com Tour is the developmental tour for the US based PGA Tour. Professionals golfers have the chance to earn their PGA Tour card; if they either failed to score well enough at that level’s Qualifying School or who have done so but then failed to win enough money to stay at that level.
Professional golfers who are on the top 25 of the money list at year’s end are given PGA Tour memberships for the next season.
Puntacana Resort & Club is home to the Caribbean’s ultimate beach and golfing experience, with 3 miles of magnificent white sand beaches and 45 holes of championship golf, set on 15,000 acres of land.
The Tom Fazio-designed “Corales” course at Puntacana Resort & Club will be the host venue. Opened in 2010, it plays along the natural cliffs, bays, ocean coves and the inland lakes and coralina quarries of the Caribbean Sea. The layout features six oceanfront holes and culminates with its last three holes known as the “Devil’s Elbow”, with the striking 18th hole requiring a dramatic forced carry over the cliff-lined Bay of Corales.
