The Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park and Reserve is a 1,500-acre private reserve owned and maintained by the Ecological Foundation. The Park and Reserve are set aside for scientific research, conservation of native and endangered species, and recreational activities of our guests.

The Ecological Reserve is comprised of a network of trails that lead to 12 freshwater lagoons and provides habitat for an abundance of birds, reptiles, insects, and other local flora and fauna.

The Ecological Park is an interpretive trail that features distinct attractions related to the natural and cultural history of the island, including an iguana habitat, petting zoo, sugarcane exhibition and a fruit tree garden.

Self-guided visits to Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park and Reserve are free of charge for hotel guests at Tortuga Bay and The Puntacana Hotel as well as Puntacana Resort & Club homeowners and residents.

Protecting the Ridgway Hawk

The Ridgway’s Hawk (Buteo ridgwayi) is found only on the island of Hispaniola and is one of the rarest animals in the world. With a total population of just 300 remaining individuals in the wild, the Ridgway’s Hawk is highly threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and indiscriminate hunting of the hawks.

The Puntacana Ecological Foundation has teamed with the Hispaniola Ornithological Society (SOH) and the Peregrine Fund in an attempt to increase the population of these hawks through controlled reintroductions in the Punta Cana region coupled with a comprehensive environmental education program. Since 2009, the project has successfully reintroduced eight hawks into the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park and Reserve. The end goal is create a breeding population within five years. Get involved.
